call my historically ignorant, but wasn’t annie oakley somewhat of a women’s rights activist/philanthropist? and on top of that, isn’t she some sort of folk cultural hero?
is it sexist just cause she’s a she and she was good with a gun? or is there a part of it that i don’t understand?
Annie Oakley may be a folk hero, but Obama’s ridiculing Hillary with the comment because the image it brings to mind is a caricature of a woman with a gun.
He could’ve said “oh so now she’s Charlton Heston” and been on message, but that wouldn’t have dismissed her as being a fool like saying “who do you think you are, (woman), Annie Oakley?”
Sure, Annie Oakley was a sharpshooter, but she’s still cartoonish as a cultural reference. After all, I called out Hillary for the Apollo Creed reference and Apollo’s no Uncle Tom (at least not in Rocky I). Carl Weathers is a fuckin badass, but her comment was still fucked up IMHO.
Maybe I’m overreacting, but apparently I was overreacting about the Rocky thing too since nobody else seems to care, so it’s a wash either way.
